| The statue above is of St. Anthony of Padua, a priest and Doctor of the Church known for his great preaching. Although he was originally accepted into the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, St. Anthony later became impressed with the holiness of the Franciscans he met and requested to be invested with the Franciscan habit instead. He is depicted wearing this habit in the statue. According to pious tradition, one night St. Anthony was reading Scripture and became enraptured as he meditated upon the Incarnation. Suddenly, the Infant Jesus appeared before him, sitting on the Bible he'd been reading and stroked Anthony's face. This story led to the usual depiction of St. Anthony holding an open Bible with the Child Jesus perched upon it. St. Anthony is often depicted holding a lily, which is a common symbol of purity when used in Christian art. | |
