Saint Sebastian Catholic Church - Stained Glass Windows

SERMON ON THE MOUNT:  The Sermon on the Mount is featured in Matthew's gospel.  Luke gives us an account of another sermon that Jesus gave where he preached about the beatitudes, the Sermon on the Plain, but the images we see in this window are connected to Matthew's account.  Jesus ascended a hill or a mount in order to deliver his sermon, which is evocative of the Old Testament story of Moses ascending the mountain to receive the 10 Commandments from God.  The mountain is a place of revelation, where Jesus speaks with divine authority and teaches his disciples.  The 8 rays in the images are symbolic of the 8 beatitudes given in Matthew's account.
