| PENTECOST: Wind and flames are both scriptural images for the presence and action of the Holy Spirit. The Pentecost story in Acts tells us that tongues of fire descended upon the disciples when the power of the Spirit came upon them. Wind is also evocative of the imagery in the creation story in Genesis, where God breathes over the formless void and creates life. Thus breath or wind became symbolic of God's creative power. The wind, the breath of God, brings the church to life and gives the disciples divine power to share in the same mission that had been entrusted to Christ. | |
