FEEDING THE MULTITUDE:  The feeding of the multitude is the only miracle of Jesus that is recorded in all four gospels.  The importance of this event lies in its connection to the Eucharist, as Jesus himself explained in the Bread of Life discourse in John's gospel.  The fish itself is one of the earliest symbols of Christ, in part because of this miracle and the many other times that fish appears in the New Testament, but also because the Greek word for fish, "ichthys," was used as an acrostic for Christ.  An acrostic is when the first word of each letter of a phrase is used to spell out another word -- so the Greek phrase "Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter" (Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior) becomes I-Ch-Th-Y-S.  It is common in Christian art to see a stylized fish with these five Greek letters contained in it.
