CENSER AND STOLE:  The stole is a vestment that priests wear around their necks, and it is often used in Christian art as a symbol of priestly authority.  The censer is the vessel that is used to hold burning incense.  The smoke that rises from the censer is a common scriptural image, especially in the psalms, where it is symbolic of prayers rising up to heaven.  "May my prayer rise before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be as an evening sacrifice." (Ps 141:2)
