| Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home (John 19: 25-27). A tableaux in marble of this text, from the Gospel of St. John, forms a background for the main altar in the church. Grouped about the image of the Crucified are the figures of three of Christ's loved ones: Mary, his mother; St. John; and Mary Magdalene. Mary, our Mother, stands to Christ's right side in abject desolation. Unable to assist or comfort Jesus, she can merely stand and watch in misery as the life slowly ebbed from her Son. Jesus gazes down upon Mary and their eyes meet in silent communication between Mother and Son. Let us not forget the faithful Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of the Cross. It was Mary Magdalene who had washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and dried them with her hair not too long before. And now Mary's tears mingle with Christ's blood and soaked into the wood beneath the feet of Jesus on the Cross. She was soon to be rewarded for her fidelity to her Divine Master, for she became the first human being to see the risen Christ. Stay near to the Cross of Christ as did these few; bear patiently your own cross, and you too shall reap the reward of Christ's faithful ones. |
